The Main Caves site has over 500 individual paintings and is one of the most accessible and well-preserved rock art sites in South Africa, accessible via a guided tour from the reserve.

Champagne Valley: Sitting in the Central Berg near Cathkin Peak, this is one of the most accessible tourism nodes in the Drakensberg. Monk’s Cowl Nature Reserve borders the valley and offers well-marked day hikes at different difficulty levels into the central escarpment.

Sani Pass: One of South Africa’s most famous mountain roads, climbing from the KwaZulu-Natal foothills to the Lesotho plateau at 2 874 metres above sea level. The South African side requires a high-clearance 4×4. The views from the top across Lesotho are extraordinary.

The KZN Midlands: The Midlands Meander stretches along the R103 between Mooi River and Pietermaritzburg — a well-known arts, crafts, and food route through rolling green farmland. A worthwhile detour on the return drive to Durban.
Practical Driving Information
Most access roads into the Drakensberg parks and reserves are tarred and accessible in a standard vehicle. Sani Pass is the notable exception and requires a high-clearance 4×4. Gravel roads into the foothills are generally well-maintained but can become slippery after rain.
