The Overberg sits about 120 kilometres east of Cape Town along the N2, and it is one of the most rewarding weekend drives in the Western Cape. The stretch between Hermanus, Stanford, and Gansbaai packs coastal scenery, whale watching, wine, fresh seafood, and some of the best land-based marine wildlife viewing in the world into a compact, easily driveable loop. Getting there from Cape Town
From Cape Town, take the N2 east past Somerset West and over the Houwhoek Pass into the Overberg. The pass itself is a pleasant stretch of road through mountains and fynbos. Hermanus is reached via the R43 off the N2, and the drive from Cape Town takes roughly 90 minutes under normal traffic. The three towns worth stopping in

Hermanus: The most well-known of the three towns, Hermanus sits on the cliffs above Walker Bay and is regarded as one of the best land-based whale watching destinations in the world. Southern right whales come into the bay to calve between June and November, and the cliff path above the shoreline gives excellent views without getting on a boat. The town has a good selection of restaurants, a wine bar strip, and a well-known seafood market. It is the natural first stop and overnight base for the weekend.

Stanford: About 15 kilometres east of Hermanus on the R326, Stanford is a small village on the Klein River that has developed a strong reputation for food, wine, and craft. The village is known for the Stanford Valley wine estates in the surrounding hills, a handful of excellent restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels genuinely off the tourist trail. The Klein River Estuary on the edge of town is good for a short walk or a canoe trip. Stanford is an easy half-day stop between Hermanus and Gansbaai.

Gansbaai: A working fishing town about 30 kilometres south of Stanford, Gansbaai is best known as the shark cage diving capital of South Africa. The waters off Dyer Island, just outside the harbour, host one of the highest concentrations of great white sharks in the world. Beyond shark diving, the town itself has a rugged, unfussy charm and the coastline around De Kelders offers excellent whale watching and sea cave walking during the season.
A suggested two-day route
The three towns form a natural loop that works well over two days. A straightforward itinerary would look something like this:
Day 1
Drive from Cape Town to Hermanus via the N2 and R43. Spend the afternoon on the cliff path above Walker Bay and settle in for dinner in town. Stay overnight in Hermanus. If you are visiting between June and November, the afternoon is a good time to watch for whales from the cliffs.
Day 2
Head east on the R326 to Stanford for a late morning stop. Browse the village, walk the river path, or stop for coffee at one of the local spots. Continue south to Gansbaai for lunch and an afternoon at the coast. Return to Cape Town via the R43 back through Hermanus, or take the longer inland route via Caledon on the N2 for a different view of the Overberg landscape.
A few practical notes
- All roads on this route are tarred and in good condition. A standard sedan handles the entire loop without any issues
- Hermanus gets busy during the whale season and over long weekends. Book accommodation in advance if you are visiting between June and November
- Shark cage diving in Gansbaai needs to be booked in advance through one of the licensed operators. It cannot be arranged on the day in most cases
- Petrol is available in Hermanus and Gansbaai. Stanford has limited facilities so fill up before you leave Hermanus
- The R326 between Hermanus and Stanford and the road south to Gansbaai are both scenic and easy to drive, with little traffic outside of peak season
