Where Two Oceans Meet: Explore The Southernmost Tip Of Africa At Cape Agulhas

Lighthouse at Cape Agulhas

This is where you can have one foot in the Indian Ocean and the other in the Atlantic Ocean, at the same time! Well, it’s only a 2, 5-hour drive from Cape Town, the road is tarred all the way and the signage is clear. You will have the rest of Africa behind you while looking into both oceans simultaneously.

Visitor Information

Although Cape Agulhas is an all-year-round destination, the best times to visit are between December and March, when it’s warm and sunny. If you want to go to the top of the lighthouse, there is a small fee for that, but the views up there are worth more than any amount of money.

Getting to the Park

Two and a half hour’s drive may be a bit daunting, more so when your excitement is at its peak. Luckily, the Western Cape is a beautiful province with lots of scenic drives. Choose one where you can stop along the way for some refreshments.

You probably want the drive to be as comfortable and memorable as possible so consider hiring a car. Not only will you be afforded the convenience of time but you will also be most relaxed, taking in the views or jamming to your favourite music. Parking is available at no extra charge.

Activities Available

Stand at the southernmost tip of Africa, where two oceans meet. Explore the old lighthouse and enjoy the vast bird life in and around the park. Try your luck at rock fishing, make sure to get a permit at Struisbaai Mall. Hike the two oceans trail to further explore, in flower season, the views are colourful and more beautiful. Between June and September, you may spot whales and there are permanent shipwrecks to look at as well.

Good To Know

There are no facilities within the park, so it is advisable to bring snacks and water. In the nearby town of Struisbaai, however, there are all the amenities and a pub. Overnight accommodations are available for those wanting to spend the weekend and may be reserved with the South African National Parks on their websites. Remember to clean up after yourself, keep to designated routes and don’t pick flowers. Use the beach at your own risk and always be mindful of the weather.

So if you’re still sceptical about the existence of magical places, then you need to visit Cape Agulhas as soon as possible. Everyone deserves to experience its splendour at least once in their lifetime.
